PRICES ARE SNEAKING BY....
I firmly believe in a hot savoury breakfast on a daily basis. And there are all kinds of varieties to be made with a little planning and so the day begins on a good note. Normally. Today I had a very nice hot breakfast and as usual l expected the day to be super with some retail therapy thrown in. Typically I belong to yet another group and after a recent get together, WhatsApped them, after the do, in what is now termed as a knee-jerk reaction. While I did get some support on my personal ID, many think I made a poor ass of myself. Maybe I will be PNG (persona non grata) for a long time to come, but I stand by what I said. Maybe it was not the forum but it is now out there. And then I went for buying some rice and daal, it being new month and so on and all but fainted. Did not, but came away with a heart ache. Toor daal Or kandi pappu is being sold at ₹. 199 per kg and here newspapers are discussing only about exorbitant tomatoes. Every other daal, including channa daal Or chanagga pappu has crossed the Rs 100 barrier. For a vegetarian, the pappus Or daal is a staple as the needed protein of the day. Taking a fistful for one person, how long can one kg last for a middle class family? I bought it at a wholesale rate, with my driver assuring me that what we bought was second grade . Then bought some more staples such as rai and jeera. The latter was at ₹135 for 100 gms, which means a kg costs ₹1350. Good old jillakara? Which is added de rigeur in all temperings? Finally I saw some Sona Masoori rice at ₹ 48 per kg. And again said driver says this rice won't suit us because it would cook fat and thick. So bought rice for ₹ 60/kg. And my good friend CM KCR says we have a glut of rice. South India earlier used to be recognised as the rice bowl of the country. And it is not that oil is reasonable. Other than palm oil every other oil is ₹ 75 and above. And I am talking wholesale rates (I think). Even as I stepped out wondering how the common man would live, I remembered arguing with Murali just a couple of days ago saying that India was dealing with inflation slightly better. I was proved wrong and in an expensive way. But for me all kinds of depression can be overcome with food. So had hot, delicious punnugulu followed by hot, sweet lemon tea at Ganapathi Complex. This bandiwala is a genius. Soothed me a tad, but I am worried that all kinds of price rise is sneaking by us and we are just barely grateful that we are able to still manage. We can do without the tomatoes for some more days. The other bit of positive news on this rainy day was that Prajwala, has become a pioneer if taking two teansgender persons for a couple of vacancies. Very inclusive beginnings and hope they will last. Prajwala as you all know is an NGO based in Hyderabad, working at eradicating prostitution and sex trafficking.
